Phrasal Verbs

Phrasal verbs are formed by a VERB + ANOTHER ELEMENT (adverb, preposition). See some examples:

• Look after – take care of someone/something

Example: Can you look after my sister while I take a bath?

• Go on – continue
  

Example: We can’t go on working like this. We are exhausted.

• Take off – remove clothing or leave on a flight

Example: I need to take off my shoes before entering the house.

Example: The plane will take off in 30 minutes.

Phrasal Verbs

• Turn on – start (machine/electronic device)

Example: Can you turn on the TV, please?

• Put up with – tolerate someone/something

Example: I don't know how you put up with your noisy neighbors.

• Get along – have a good relationship

Example: I get along well with my new co-worker.

• Break down – stop working (machine)

Example: My car broke down on my way to work.

• Call off – cancel an event

Example: Unfortunately we will need to call off the party.

• Give up – stop doing something, surrender

Example: I give up, I can't solve this math problem.

• Turn off – switch off (machine/electronic device)

Example: I need to turn off the light before leaving the office.

• Look out – be careful

Example: Look out, there's a car coming!

• Ask out – invite someone for a date

Example: Jack finally asked his crush out on a date.

• Look up – search for information

Example: I need to look up a word in the dictionary.

• Make up – fabricate a story or reconcile with someone

Example: She made up an excuse for being late.

Example: Best friends should always make up after a fight.

• Run out – not have something anymore

Example: We ran out of milk, we need to get more.

• Stand for – represent, tolerate, abide by

Example: We won't stand for such behavior!

• Back up – support, or make a copy of files

Example: Can you back me up in this argument?

Example: Don't forget to back up your important files on your computer.

• Check in – register at a hotel/airport

Example: I need to check in at the hotel before 3PM.

• Give in – agree after a long argument, surrender

Example: I finally gave in to my daughter's request to get a dog.

• Keep up – maintain, continue at the same rate

Example: You need to keep up your English practice to improve your skills.

• Pick up – collect someone or something

Example: Can you pick up my laundry from the dry cleaner's?

The present continuous is used when the action is happening now (continuing action).

It is common to use these time markers:

Structure:

Affirmative:

Subject + Be + verb + ing

Example:

He is doing the homework now.

He = Personal pronoun (subject)

Is = To be verb

Doing = Main verb (do) + ing

Affirmative:

Subject + Be + not + verb + ing

Example:

He is not doing the homework now.

Interrogative:

Be + Subject + verb + ing

Example:

Is he doing the homework now?

No, he isn’t. He is reading.
